Ideas For How To Be GREEN In Apartments

Hit The Lights!
It may sound obvious, but it happens to everyone. There's a very good reason that light switches are near the door (yes, so you can see, but also so you remember to turn them off!). On your way out, hit the lights! The environmental impact is substantial.

Use Reusable Water Bottles
Waterloo Region offers safe and drinkable tap water and in-home filtration systems such as Brita filters are available, so why not switch to a resuable and refillable BPA-free bottle? click below to learn more about BPA.

Cloth Napkins
Imagine how much less paper towel and napkins would be used if all homes switched to cloth napkins. Relatively inexpensive, reusable and environmentally friendly, they can be ordered from Amazon by clicking the link below. Better yet - repurpose your old linen into cloth napkins!

Proper Disposal of Batteries - Not Just In The Bin!
It is highly recommended that batteries be properly disposed of and proper disposal does not mean tossing in the trash bin or the recycling. Batteries are full of toxic chemicals which spill out after time. Click the image below to learn more.

Turn The Computer Off
Computers left running or in "sleep" mode still use quite a bit of energy. For best results, you should completely shut down or select the "hybernate" option. The article below explains other ways to help the environment by reducing computer electricity consumption.

Warm / Hot Laundry Water Is Overrated!
Are you still using warm/hot water to do your laundry? If so, why? It is only sometimes required. Make the switch to cold! Click the image below to find out more.

2 Degrees Can Make Many Changes
Did you know that adjusting your thermostat (as applicable) can not only dramatically reduce your carbon footprint but also reduce your electricity bill? It's true! Click below to learn more.

Lighten Up - Make The Switch to Compact Fluorescents!
If you haven't made the switch from incandescent to compact fluorescent bulbs yet, it is quite possibly one of the easiest changes to make. And - you'll save money on bulbs as well! Click the image below to learn more.

Fix Leaking Taps and Running Toilets
If you have leaky pipes, or a running toilet, submit a maintenance work order to have them fixed. As a benefit for residents, STAMM Investments Limtied will pay to keep these things in good order.

Plants & Your Balcony
At STAMM Investments Limited, we encourage the use of your balconies and find joy in seeing residents make the most of their space.

The use of heavily-weighted flower pots to plant small veggies and herbs is a great use of the balcony. Just think; if you grow enough for just a few meals, it is less you are buying and just a little better for the environment. Going green is not an all or nothing thing. Every little bit counts.

Appliance Use
Whether you have in-suite laundry or you use the on-site machines in the laundry rooms at your property, there are several options available to reduce your carbon footprint.

Don’t run the dishwasher if it is not full. The same goes for the washer and dryer. Wear clothing more than once before you wash it to create less loads. Make your own detergents that are natural.

Green Cleaning
We use a line of green cleaning products in our buildings wherever we can. Are you doing the same?

It doesn’t matter where you live. You can use green cleaning products like baking soda and vinegar no matter what. You don’t have to live in a house in order to clean with them.

At STAMM Investments Limited, we have an onsite recycling program. We offer both grey and blue bins onsite for residents to dispose of their recyclable waste.

Did you know that recycling still contributes to climate impact? Consider reusing what you can.

Just because your storage space may be limited in an apartment doesn’t mean you can't save things to be re-used.

Control The Elements
You can take small, affordable and simple steps to weatherize and take advantage of the elements. Use floor fans to help distribute cold air in the summer. In winter, turn your thermostat down at night when you're sleeping. In the summer, open the windows at night to allow cooler air in.
